Importance of Cysteine in a Protein-Free Diet

Sir, even though cysteine is a non-essential amino acid, cysteine deficiency occurs in a patient on protein-free diet. Can you please explain why? Thank you.

  1. "Non essential" aminoacids are those which can be synthesized by the body and so they need not be supplied in the diet. during a protein free diet, one may develop deficiency of the essential amino acids. Non essential amino acids will be synthesized from other substrates in the body. But as Cysteine can be synthesized only from Methionine (Which is essential amino acid) there will be deficiency of cysteine. {Tyrosine and Hydroxylysine are other non essential aminoacids which can be synthesized only from essential amino acids}
